“AGRONOMISTS OF THE WORLD” (AGWO), or in Greek: “ΓΕΩΠΟΝΟΙ ΤΟΥ ΚΟΣΜΟΥ”, is a Non-governmental, Non-Profit Organization born in Greece in July 2010, now being at the stage of further expansion and development. Founders, Associates and Members of AGWO are eminent Scientists and Professionals in Greece and abroad, in the fields of Agricultural Sciences, Agriculture Economics, Horticulture, Forestry, the Farming Community, Biotechnology, National & International Research, Academia, Environmental Sciences, Rural & Regional Development, Landscape Architecture & Environmental Design, Spatial Planning, Landscape Contractors, Irrigation Engineering, Economics, the Agricultural Bank of Greece, Food & Nutrition Industry reps, the Media and Trade Service Businesses. These fields of activity are well represented in the Board of Directors and among the first 64 Associate Members (& shareholders) who have already joined AGWO with enthusiasm, while others have expressed their full support in various ways.
AGWO is establishing a global network with “focal point” representatives in foreign countries (USA, Canada, EU-27, Egypt, Balkan States, Israel, and Russia.
AGWO aims to:
• promote the «resurrection» of a vanishing and diverse Agricultural sector in a severe «economic and food crisis» environment,
• help with ideas and sound rural planning proposals so that young farmers stay in the countryside,
• support low income consumers and guide them to accessible, low cost & healthy nutrition solutions
• provide know how and training related to Urban and Peri-Urban sustainable farming techniques for food production, Urban forestry practices, roof garden development and proper urban runoff management
• investigate the applicability and promote modern alternative cultivation and management practices in crop production (i.e. integrated pest management & Precision agriculture)
• Propose and carry out studies the feasibility of Agricultural biotechnology in traditional agricultural environments around the Mediterranean basin (small parcel ownership, traditional farm structures, wide diversity of crops & bioclimate)
• Propose and participate in projects related to the protection of natural resources and the minimization of impacts due to Climatic Change in the production of food,
• Improve standards of living of both urban and rural populations,
• support sustainable agricultural development and environmental friendly investments
• protect biotopes, wetlands, national parks and agricultural biodiversity at national and international level, promote rural landscape conservation awareness
• Rehabilitate damaged Urban, peri-Urban, Rural and Forest landscapes from Forest fires, mining and erosion
Its aim is also to help promote collaboration between other Associations and NGOs with similar interests and scope, throughout the country of Greece and the rest of the world, so that together we can more effectively partner with Domestic and International Organizations and each other to create a more peaceful, just, equitable and sustainable world for this and future generations.

Since September 2010, AGWO has established its first seven working Scientific Working Groups, already working on various fields and have produced interesting Reports and Proposals submitted to the Government of Greece and published in the media. These first groups are:

2. Therapeutic Gardens & Landscapes
3. Agricultural Policy – Production & Trade – Ag Balance of Trade”
4. Biodiversity (Genetic Material and Biotope Protection)
5. Food and Human Nutrition issues
6. Agricultural Biotechnology versus Conventional crop production and Traditional farming
7. Domestic production of Ornamental plants for Landscaping
